When push comes to shove, USA has Canada as a pet dog and China has North Korea as a pet pit bull dog.

In a dog eat dog and human eat dog approach to life people like Warmbier run into trouble. If Taiwan or Quebec or North Korea or Scotland or England or New Zealand or India or Hong Kong wish to be independent of centralized kleptocratic authoritarians it's interesting how the central planning bosses behave in each case.

It seems better to be Canadian than North Korean. The Huawei lady is not in a cage and is in good health whereas Warmbier was sent back dead as seems likely with the Canadian in a cage in China.

One can go shopping as USA did for slaves from Africa, buying territory in Louisiana and Alaska, or just be big and tough and take over as in Hawaii, Texas, California, Tibet, Taiwan, and the Mongolian marauding, or by trade and arms supply to competing local yokels as in New Zealand.

As Japan and Germany found, conquest can lead to resistance on a grand scale. But it has also been successful for millions of years.
