China has a "trade deal" but wants IP theft dealt with in a different venue.

As they have for years US negotiators, and finally Trump himself, want IP theft dealt with as part of a comprehensive trade deal because ending IP theft coupled with enforcement is the only "trade deal" which matters.

Trump's tariffs are endlessly annoying to Republicans, but if the stick works to achieve the end result it was a good stick.

China's government has always been long on talk and promises but short on action.

Building enforcement mechanisms into the trade deal is utterly horrifying to China's leaders, but ultimately with this administration, or a future one, it's the only deal they'll be able to make.

Too many influential interests in the US and Europe are being hurt by IP theft for any US administration to be able to ignore this.

Every time some Trump spokesperson says a deal is close, China says it isn't because they don't want to be pressured to agree to enforcement - so high tariffs it will be.

Yes the higher prices are being paid by Americans, but so long as the deal is completed those were high prices were worth paying.
