If Joe's Pet Shoppe want's to provide online services he can purchase an inexpensive internet server with free software from Microsoft and hire a local consulting firm to set it up for him. Alternatively, he can have a local service provider provide everything. Why would Joe use AOL? Let's say Joe decides to get out of the pet business and compete directly with AOL. He can purchase everything he needs to do that off-the-shelf and he can connect his site to a network of sites and call it JOL. A centralized company that writes all the software, provides all of the routing and switching equipment, maintains all of the proprietary databases, does all of the marketing and billing? No thanks says Joe.

By the way, we haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg as far as what Java and ActiveX will provide. Do not confuse the hoaky web pages we use today with the applications of tomorrow -- or at least in the next few weeks and months.

Shorting AOL is like taking candy from a baby and you should feel an overwhelming feeling of guilt for doing so.
