<<We would have a great situation if they just dismantled the telcos completely and replace the whole infrastructure with a new computer based system.>>

Johnathan I would hope that there is an understanding that nothing comes for free. How can we expect phone companys (or any business) to take on the investment of updating technology without someone paying for it?? The doggy system is still the best voice system in the world bar none. It is time for telco's to move forward and they will, but don't expect them to make investments and let ISP's get the use of it for free then we would all be in trouble.
The issues are very complex. By the way why can't ISP's get access to the cable TV lines? At least there is some activity in making the ROBOC's compete.
