Techs and telcos agree on faster Net access Compaq Computer, Intel and Microsoft reportedly will announce next week they have agreed on a technology standard which could boost Web access speed by a factor of 30 using plain old telephone lines. The agreement was reported Tuesday by The New York Times, which said the group also includes GTE Corp., and the regional Bell companies except Bell Atlantic. They hope that new modems supporting the "digital subscriber line" (DSL) will be available by Christmas. DSL is currently in tests by some local telephone companies; U.S. West offers it in Phoenix at a monthly subscriber fee of $40. The agreement on DSL is seen as a competitive move. Howard Anderson, managing director of the Yankee Group, a technology consulting firm, said "The real target of this is the cable modems. Now the consumer has a choice."
