I've been on SI for a while but never posted to the thread. Long term holder of MRK, with shares at the $28 level. Today was a good day and it looks like we have broken out of the doldrums.

I would say that all the junk we have been hearing about MRK's pipeline deficit is just that; Junk. MRK has never been a company to hype its future products to the general press unlike other pharmaceutical companies seem to.

You didn't hear a lot about Crixivan ahead of time but it got fast track FDA approval in either 42 or 43 days. The fastest drug approval ever granted by the FDA. Compare this to Pfizer's "new" drug that is supposed to work on erectile dysfunction. They have been yacking about fast track for four or six months now. It still is not out and who knows if the drug will ever be approved by the FDA?

MRK tends not to have drugs pulled from the market once appproved as was the case with a Pfizer drug last year that was a newly vauted drug to help with diabetes. Unfortunately, it appeared that in the real world it was causing too much liver damage and a few deaths. The FDA pulled it.

What might we expect to see in 98. Perhaps Propecia and Crixivan heading towards blockbuster status. There is a good chance that new vaccines will be out for HBV and most importantly a gp120 vaccine for HIV. MRK is on track and research spending as always remains a top priority.

Brian Malloy
