HBO recently started the series "Chernobyl" and so far (episode 3 this week) it has been quite good. In addition each week there is a podcast on the net which goes into greater detail about the events that were depicted in that week's video such as were the characters "real" or were they a composite of several people. It also enriches facts that you might have missed in the episode like the significance of whether a drinking glass is upside down or not (fallout).

Most fascinating is how the Soviet system was initially forced to perceive the crisis: first, denial of a crisis; second, a problem but not a bad one; third, a problem of unknown magnitude since the on site measuring devices can't accurately measure the magnitude of the problem; fourth, realization that they were 48 hours away from a thermonuclear explosion that would make large portions of the USSR a waste land. Of course along the way you get the system's bureaucratic finger pointing about on whose watch the crisis occurred and the fact that a bureaucrat with a chemistry degree is in charge of the site but doesn't know how a nuclear reactor works.

If the remainder of the series is as good as these episodes, it should be required viewing in public high schools to portray the realities of socialism. Free health care doesn't work so well when milk is used to treat radiation burns.
