I just did an MS update:

May 21, 2019—KB4497934 (OS Build OS 17763.529)

Audio stopped working (no audio output device installed).

Contacted HP support on-line chat. The technician took control of my computer, uninstalled the audio devices, downloaded and installed the latest version. After a reboot the audio was working again.

Technician explained that this was a problem with MS update and Realtek audio. Hopefully MS will fix this going forward.

Can't say enough good things about HP on-line support.
