"Not so fast partner" as Lee Corso would say. Ethernet, probably true, but not necessarily wired. IR has its place for certain types of in-home wireless, but there are several different IR "standards" (multiple standards is an oxymoron), and also some limitations. RF ISM-band wireless will have its place too, in my opinion. USB--probably big someday, but the hub could be RF,IR,or wired. 1394--maybe. Some distance limitations to overcome (repeaters required for any reasonable length run), and this is surely being worked. And there's the sleeper--powerline communications within the home. The impressions you probably have of the data rate limitations of powerline comm are being overcome as we speak. As mundane as powerline comm sounds, this will push the technology envelope the most with advanced channel coding/modulation because it is such a harsh, unpredictable environment. Worth following in my opinion.
