Syngenta and the purchase by China hit my radar last year. If you look at the top 10 seed companies, this is the largest by far owned by China. Others in the top 10 include non-US companies but US owned still are 3 or 4.

US used to be No 1 but w/ the GMO designed seed technology, there are other players capturing market share. I believe the trend will move back to specialty seeds (non-GMO varieties) and/or specialized varieties targeted for healthy food rather than quantity.

New seed varieties have been drought resistant Corn & Rice that can now be grown on marginal land. Also more salt tolerant varieties (specifically for Rice).

That was one of the reasons I accumulated shares in SANW. A great research company working on these problems. I think they have a few other specialty crops in development. They have a research facility located in Sacramento CA. I believe they work w/ UC Davis Ag group/
