<< The big news came as five Japanese companies announced
something about semi equipments.>>
The Nikkei Net reported that the five would cut semi equipment capital spending by a minimum of 10% for FY1998. This is the third consecutive year that capital spending has declined in Japan. From a high of 886 billion Yen in FY1995 to a projected FY98 number of 700 billion Yen.

The projected cut of about 80 billion Yen equals about US $6.3 billion, or about one seventh of Intel's capital spending budget for 1998 (not including the DEC plant acquisition). I don't think this is a big surprise to anyone in the biz.

Check the site at satellite.nikkei.co.jp
and you can get it straight from the horse's mouth without any analyst spin.
