That was my understanding, that there is shared bandwidth on the neighborhood coax segment. But isn't it true that DSL does not have any shared segments?

I suggest you re-read the 'xDSL myths' piece on the @Home site (www.home.net)

I'll do that, but I'd prefer to read something more independent.
