Another interesting post from quora comparing the US to other countries.

Why don't we have more people from countries like Norway immigrating to America?

I’m from Germany and I moved to the States temporarily and primarily lived in Orlando, FL.

I hated it.

  • The stupidity is vast and appalling.
  • Freedom is a lie. People are enslaved to their work.
  • You’re a victim of your circumstances. Social mobility is a lie for the majority.
  • Rent is obnoxiously high. 9/10 times you will have to live with roommates. I lived with 6 people in one apartment and paid around $500 a month. 6 people.
  • Students are ridden with debt. I will be able to attend law school with NO DEBT. It’s free here.
  • You’re going to spend one heck of an amount of $$ on food to keep up your health. If you can even afford to do so.
  • I never felt safe doing anything. Not even walking across the street. Anybody could hurt you at any given time.
  • You can get scammed everywhere.
  • Affordable insurances make you pay a deductible, an out-of-pocket maximum and an additional percentage of the list price, mine was 20%. To me this is not an insurance.
  • No one cares about your well being. It’s all about profits. Even for the government. You’re just a number, one of many.
All in all, I am thankful for the experience because it made me proud of where I live and what we have achieved for our society.

I don’t think I’d have ever realised how good I had it if I didn’t live and work in the States.

The only downside I've ever seen to Germany is the early closing of many stores. Factor in a thousand up sides in comparison to the USA. I'm British and next to the UK, Germany is pretty much the only country I would consider moving to. Americans are so uninformed about how poorly their nation compares with much of the world.

Haha true! I don’t think that one is ever going to change! At least not until automation takes over.

The early closing is a great thing in my opinion, because gives workers proper time off work. You start with long opening hours you end up with Saturday afternoon openings. Then Sundays. Then 24/7 as the US. At that point, you can even play a team sport regularly because you work shifts. And you cannot work full time (therefore no job related health insurance) unless you accept to work every shift when asked. That is the US for you.

I think we should stick to our European traditions especially in work, education, life-style, no religious interference in politics (*) and public health related issues. We should keep Europe FAR AND AWAY from US influence and imperialism. This may sound a 1960s stance, but is valid now as it was then. I’m not pro Russia either (in case some US troll accuse me of being so. But I certainly advocate strongly for a very strong and independent European Union, even military (so US troops can pack their stuff and go home. And the risk with Britain leaving the EU is that they would become even more a US dominion.

(*) In my country, Italy, I’m sick and tired of the Pope (chief of a foreign state), and other catholic priests giving political advice. This is a cancer we had now for almost a century, in a country united as secular then reversed to catholicism by Mussolini and kept “there” since. However, the Vatican policies are much better and make more sense than the moronic and malicious right wing christian ideas (both protestant and catholic), in the US politics and education.

The beneficial effects of closing early can be achieved by having two shifts of workers. Seemingly there are enough people able and willing to work in each of the shifts. Maybe , say, Sunday closings could be beneficial though.

This was an interesting perspective. I live in the US and I am grateful for what I can achieve here. This is a much better option for me as an immigrant. Also, not like European countries are particularly welcoming of immigrants (once you are there is fine, but moving there is much harder than moving to the US).

I do agree that for a developed country, this place is sort of backwards in many aspects and flat out wrong in the way healthcare is managed (health is a purely for profit business here). Too religious and very hypocritical at that as well. But even when I don't like some stuff, I do like more things that what I dislike.
