Now Gene. I am a northerner and obviously if I had been born around that time, I would have fought on the side my state decided to align with in that war. Lee, who was considered to be among the very best the US army had to offer, was asked by Lincoln to lead the war effort on the side of the North. He told Lincoln he would "go as Virginia goes".

I think most people would make the same decision. Virginia was his home and that is where his family lived. For some people (and it wasn't nearly as many as they try to tell you in this day and age), the war was fought over slavery. But the truth of the matter, is that slavery was only a minor issue with respect to that war. There is a reason the South called it "the War of Northern Aggression". When the Union was formed, there was never any intention that the Federal Government had dictatorial power over the states. Most people believed they were part of the Union by choice and not due to some right the Government had over their lives. The Northern States had been forcing the South to sell them their raw materials and had stopped the South from negotiating their own deals with Europe. So we get back to what wars are really always fought over and that is money. Most Southerners did not own slaves and they certainly did not fight in that war to save slavery. They fought over States rights and over the idea that they had the right to self determination.

Obviously it appears to have been better that the South did not win the war, but I would never consider the men who fought on the side of the south to have been traitors or to have committed treason. There was just an entirely different concept back then as to what the Republic really was supposed to be and whether or not States rights superseded Federal rights.

When I was young, this history was taught even in my Northern state high school. What they teach today, is total bullshit. They leave out 90% of the story and therefor I understand how many people have the wrong idea about that war. It was a tragic war and hundreds of thousands on both sides lost their lives. Very sad.

The above is a nutshell version of the real story, but in my opinion is accurate.
