There is no doubt that Lincoln was anti-slavery. But that is in not the issue, in my opinion.

Anyway, there is no way that this would ever be settled on a message board. Volumes have been written about all of this. The emotional issues are always used to stir the pot when it comes to war. It would be very rare for any side to say, "we are fighting this war over money", but that is exactly what most wars are fought over (when it comes to leadership decisions)

Over 3/4s of the Southerners (or their families) had no ties to slavery whatsoever, but they still fought. (some estimates of slave ownership are as low as 5%). Lincoln had to impose a tax on young men's families in the North if they did not fight. That is enough in and of itself to cause one to look deeper into the issue as to what the war was really all about.
