Different perspectives —

The recurring thought is that even though we see an ongoing debacle -- globally and in Canada -- there's a generation or two of younger people who see what's happening as normal. And from their POV, it is.

Kruschev shouting and pounding the lectern with his shoe, when addressing the UN: that was pretty gonzo. With sad resignation, we learned to live with decades of nuclear brinkmanship.

We saw Goldwater declare 'Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice' -- thus legitimizing radical terrorism for any nutcase definition of 'liberty'.

We saw Nixon pervert institutions of democracy, while Clinton promoted concepts of neoliberalism -- and practices such as derivatives.

We saw Obama tell bankers ' My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks' — and then, side with the bankers.

Yes, we appear to be facing existential crises with climate change and overshoot -- but that's no worse than nuclear annihilation.

I'm not sure younger generations are wrong. Maybe it's just the same old same old.
