Keith, I wouldn't say I'm an expert.. but I'm involved with NC's thru Oracles subsid. NC Inc.

We are selling these solutions, they come pre configured .. set top boxes, hub and server. The server OS is Unix (solaris I think).. this holds system disk storage and boot files for the individual NC's devices.

Oracle/NC Inc. license the software NCos and associated e-suite tools and do not get involved with the hardware.. apart from defining standards.

Watch out for IBM/Lotus e-suite package.. this is really going to take major market share away from MSFT in the WP/Spreadsheet/Presentation slides arena..

Watch out also for Oracles Interoffice suite.. full database messaging.. I believe a lot of ISP providers will standardize on this over the next 12 months. It provides huge scalability and major performance advantages at the high end of the #no of user scale.

IBM and Sun are standardizing on the JavaOS..
Both produce their own box not sure if IBM uses Suns JavaOS or produce their own.

The major issue though is how quickly this technology will be adopted. IT WILL HAPPEN. My company, we are an Oracle Product & NC reseller, is seeing tremendous market interest in these devices. They are being deployed. We have at least 6 blue chip organizations that are interested and have budget allocated to NC purchases. This is with next to NO marketing having taken place.

We are getting down to $700 per user device, I can see that going even lower ($500?). With the major savings being on ongoing support and maintenance costs. The cost argument for management in commercial organizations is just to compelling. Every prospect that I talk to, usually about Oracle.. wants to talk NC's.

The other interesting point is the statement yesterday from Compac/Intel and Msft... the collaborative project to increase available bandwidth on current phone line tech. from 56k to 1.5mg per sec to be available by xmas '98. This, in my opinion, is what will really drive the growth explosion in this market.

Undoubtedly Oracle will make a profit, from the NC initiative on 4 fronts..
1.NC opsys and tools license and support charges, through NC Inc.
2.Services
3.Driving larger database requirement... license and support
4.Which will spin off more application sales..etc. etc.

Just my humble ramblings.

Good Luck

Brendan
