Regaring DSL vs @home a couple of things come to mind. First Bell Atantic
will shortly join the regional phone companies and GTE, Microsoft, Intel and
Compaq to announce new standards for DSL this next week.

With new modems DSL will intially standardize at modem speeds of 1.5 million
bits per second. They can range upto 8 million bits, but that will only be available to those closest to central telephone equipment.

This brings up two important points. First there is currently no standardization
for the new modems. Once that is done (maybe it will be announced next week) it is going to take the phone companies considerable time to equip their central offices with the technology needed to make the speedy connections. This will result in the initial canabalization of the phone companies current T1 and ISDN services, since these are the current users
that will be most interested in using them. Current revenues from these services
are significantly higher than those that will be derived from DSL.
