Tell me about it. It's like most of the US population is in a trance - like my parents and brother. Somehow my sister and I allowed ourselves to escape into the rational world where independent critical thinking is allowed. Even as kids we thought they were nuts. Germans are good at not crossing the street when it says "Don't Walk" but somehow that doesn't seem to have impaired their independent thinking otherwise. I think the whole nazi / denazification experience gave German society a chance for a new independent future outside of the false paradigms of right-left which prevent people from thinking. I think most Americans think Angela Merkel's conservative party are "the liberals" - I think most Americans find Germany confusing.
