I lived for 7 years just 50 miles east of Memphis. Every once in awhile, on slow news days, they'd talk about the New Madrid quake in the 19th century and how it will happen again... eventually... they still don't build to withstand even moderate quakes there.

Fun fact, only some native americans and a handful of missionaries actually were in the area when it happened. They report that the MS River flowed backwards for 3 days as it filled the new depression it caused and what is now called Reelfoot Lake. Nobody believed the story until about 50 years or so ago geologists were able to prove it happened just as described.
