Kevin Durrant and Kawhi Leonard ...

<< Unfortunately for the Raptors, this finals will probably have an asterisk attached: * All Star Kevin Durrant did not play. >>

It's unfortunate that the Warriors have played without Kevin Durant and it will be interesting to see if he plays tonight. There won't be an asterisk though if the Raptors take the series just as there's no asterisk on the Hawks series victory over the Celtics in Bill Russell's sophomore pro season when Bill turned an ankle in game 3 of the 1958 finals. Had it not been for that the Celtics would likely have won 10 straight NBA championships instead of 8 (and 12 of 13) and Bill would have had a solo ownership of the record for the most championships won by an athlete (12) in a North American sports league rather than having to share it at 11 with "The Pocket Rocket," Henri Richard of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens.

After sweeping the Blazers to advance to their fifth straight NBA Finals this year, the Warriors joined Bill Russell's Celtics as the only teams to make five in a row. Of course even with the single finals series loss in '58 the Russell's Celtics did make 10 straight finals appearances

Stephen A. makes the point that Kevin Durant's injury doesn't diminish Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors' greatness ...

It is interesting that both Kawhi and Kevin who have had some great games against each other through the years lead the list of free agents this year and may not be playing in Toronto and Oakland next year.

Cheers, - Eric L. -
