Did I ever tell you my Willie Brown shoe story? The first time I saw Willie Brown was at a McGovern campaign rally at the Cow Palace. Willie was an assemblyman; I don't know if he was Speaker yet. This crazy guy tells some fashionable woman to give him her shoe. Says if somebody will pledge $XX??, he will drink champagne out of that shoe. He got the money and had his drink. It was a big rally; the kind that says "winner". In the end, we won one state, plus SF/South City/Daly City.
