The motto where I worked was: Do it right the first time — it’s faster and cheaper than doing it over.”

BP ended up paying tens of billions of dollars in an effort to not spend $10 million to complete the well the right way — the way RIG suggested, Halliburton and SLB and most of the sub contractors were urging the BP capt to do, but he refused almost every outfit on Horizon (except RIG who owned and leased it all to BP) ended up pulling their people off including my company — oddly I had been there for VRC for commissioning the capital equipment installed sort of in the shipyards to get ready to be moved into place. I went out several times for my 2nd employer to troubleshoot various maintenance issues related to monitoring rig “health” — the sort of thing that gives the operators early warning for minor and major problems before they happen.

It was east troubleshooting... BP or some at their direction kept literally pulling the plug on our computers that monitored everything and flashed both visual and loud alarms when needed. Or, after informing the Coast Guard (several companies, not just us), subsequent visits to troubleshoot or upgrade HW or SW, we found our computers and real-time data transmissions to both BP’s HQ in Houston, and to our experts on data analysis in Houston and Escondido CA, where our HQ is was online and working but someone got tired of the frequent warnings and disabled them.

IMO, that BP guy should have been charged with murder.
