Canadian corporations dodged up to $11B in taxes in a year, CRA report finds

'"Like other taxpayers, corporations may be non-compliant with their tax obligations due to both intentional and unintentional actions ranging from honest mistakes to aggressive tax avoidance," the CRA said.

Sonia Dhaliwal, an accounting professor at the University of Guelph in Ontario, said the $11-billion figure was higher than she thought it would have been, but in and of itself, it isn't enough to make her think Canada has a rampant problem with corporate tax evasion.'

  • So what's the story? Are Canadian companies "dodging" taxes, or just innocently mistaken? What accounts for numerous stories about common folk with small tax liabilities, being hounded by CRA -- while corporations escape, using the expensive benefit of lobbyists and lawyers? How do Canadians justify stories of accounting firms and corporate lobbyists meeting meeting socially and officially with CRA? What explains the disparity between treatment of corporations and ordinary people?
  • It's difficult to understand how, after years, not one Canadian or corporation named in the Panama papers has been jailed.
