Free memberships? I've been around for a long time and I've never heard even a hint of such a thing. Even if that's true, it sure isn't readily available info for members to pass along to a survivor. As far as someone not wanting his or her passing to be recognized, the "free" membership information simply doesn't get passed along to anyone. That's not an argument for keeping it a secret.
