Precisely. The amorphous nature of the leadership is in stark contrast to one simple fact: the Supreme Leader (Khameini) has ultimate say-so. But he is sick and old, suggesting that the succession is in play. This in my view may well be the reason for the latest drama. Younger folks may wish to show off their strength by challenging the US. Plus, Khameini may not be able to control them as well as before.
