I went to Dollarama and bought a dozen of the plastic domes (the smaller kind that is $2.50 for 3). I am thinking that I will put a dome over each plant, then pull a plastic mesh over the whole area and secure the mesh into the ground at the rim (via tent hooks or the like).

The idea being that the domes keep the birds and squirrels away, the mesh holds the domes in place, and the nails hold the mesh in place. It is light, needs little work, and can be easily packed at the end of the season. I will let you know how it goes.

BTW, this year I have an extra help. Meeka happily chases all the unwanted visitors from the yard :) But we also have substantially fewer squirrels and hares for a very different reason. A large construction several blocks away has displaced a number of coyotes into our neighborhood, which in turn has highly reduced the number of the pests. Some people want them off, but given the choice, I prefer coyotes over the hares and squirrels.
