How the Chinese got the US wrong. The Communist Party needs stability. Sudden changes are not good for such regimes. There are so many factors that they have to control, that changes can lead to the loss of that control. Problem is technology. It changes fast and faster and affects deeply any regime. China grew by importing technologies and being the world's factory. IP was just a little part of the deal. Then about 15 years ago or so, technology became a big part of the deal, the US from which technology is crucial, for competitiveness and security, start having a closer look at the Chinese deal they had with. The Chinese also realized that China needed to dominate technology if it had to keep the gains they achieved. Technology, stopped being part of the deal and became the real deal for both China and the US. The Chinese, Communist Part clique in power, averse of changes as they are, did not foresee the outcomes. They seem not to play games, like the oil majors do, running 'What If' scenarios and be prepared for different outcomes: 'What if" the US. elects an government that would pull the hand brake end the free transfer of IP? 'What if" the US makes good on their threats? They believed too much on their capabilities and that was their downfall. They though, totally wrongly, that their merchantilist policies would go on forever. And even after DJT became president they played like he was a businessman and could be dealt with. big mistake. A regime that gets its legitimacy on the premises that it is strong and will negotiate on a position of strength it is very difficult to deal with the DJT approach as everything for them is Interference on their sovereignty The Chinese people will see tat as display of weakness. Therefore the Chinese are painted into a corner
