And "I" ask, WHY NOT? -> Novell Lags In Directory Linking -- Start-up could link NDS with NT servers

By Monua Janah

Novell continues to develop a technology, now due by year's end, that would synchronize its directory service with Microsoft Windows NT servers. But many users want this capability now, and they wonder
why Novell won't use a third-party product, due out in October, that could do the job.

NetVision, a Lindon, Utah, startup founded by Todd Lawson, a former Novell programmer, is ready tostart selling Synchronicity. The product updates NT domains with changes made within Novell Directory Services, such as the addition of a user or network device (IW, June 24, p. 18). Eventually, the software also will allow NDS to be updated from NT, and will synchronize other databases, such as Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange.

Most large NetWare shops need this capability. Typically, these users have brought in NT servers to run applications-but they cannot manage these servers from NDS.

Although Novell has been talking with NetVision for some time, it is now pushing its own solution, code-named Tabasco. Some users are asking why Novell insists on doing everything itself.

"We have a large investment in NDS," says David Hasselbach, a network engineer at the University of Michigan's medical center in Ann Arbor. The facility is testing Synchronicity in its network of hundreds
of NetWare servers. "This product allows us to manage users and groups in NT and NDS from one location. It will save us a lot of time."

He adds:"Novell would be kind of silly not to look at this technology and go with it. They need to start turning out product, and this is a good product, built very solidly around NDS."

Michael Simpson, director of marketing for Novell's Internet infrastructure division, was not available for comment last week. But in a statement, he said that while Novell supports NetVision's efforts to integrate other products with NDS, Novell's own technology will "compete quite well, concerning price and elegance of design."

Joe <you know an editorial will follow>

OK, first point. Users want this, and they ask why does Novell insist on doing everything themselves? Second point, this is here NOW, and Novell "has been talking..." ..etc.. etc.. and Oh my, dear, dear..
Michael Simpson was unvailable for comment last week, but Ummm.. Mr.
Simpson says <stern face> Novells "OWN" technology will compete quite well, concerning price and <get this> "elegance" of design.

Look Simpson, First, why the hell were you UNAVAILABLE? Second, you sound like a pompus ass with that bullshit statement. Third, I don't think YOU or your COMPANY have the LUXURY to BE SO POMPUS! And lastly,
to me, it's a no-brainer. WHY THE HELL DON'T YOU DO WHAT THE USERS WANT AND BUY THE FRIGGIN' TECHNOLOGY NOW !!!!!!!!

SEE MY PREVIOUS POST ON "WHITHER NOVELL" IF YOU WANT A "REALITY CHECK".

You know, just to remind you guys for the ZILLIONTH time, you are:
