I think many of the problems over the years were based on users not wanting to upgrade hardware and complaining because they could not find drivers for their older hardware. I mentioned here multiple times how Microsoft had decided a few years ago to cut or greatly reduce the hardware legacy anchor which slowed progress of Windows advancing forward.

While Apple has always be able to move forward with software advancements because they honestly didn’t care about this legacy and felt if users want to continue with Apple advancements they would need to continually upgrade their hardware.

Supporting very old hardware has always been a bigger problem for Microsoft than Apple and slowed advancements in software development and adoption.
