STEPHEN T. BELLRINGER TO JOIN BALLARD BOARD OF DIRECTORS

VANCOUVER, Jan. 21 /CNW/ - Ballard Power Systems Inc. announced today
that Stephen T. Bellringer has joined the Company's Board of Directors.
Mr. Bellringer is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Orca Bay
Sports & Entertainment, owners of the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey
League and the Vancouver Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association.
Prior to his joining Orca Bay in September, 1997, Mr. Bellringer was President
and CEO of BC Gas Inc. from January, 1996, and President and CEO of each of BC
Gas Utility (1994 to 1995), Trans Mountain Pipeline Company Limited (1993 to
1994) and Union Gas Ltd (1985 to 1993). Mr. Bellringer holds undergraduate and
graduate business degrees from the University of Windsor in Ontario, has
completed the program for management development at Harvard University and has
been recognized with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from the University
of Windsor.
Mr. Bellringer has served on the Board of BC Children's Hospital
Foundation, as member of the Premier of British Columbia's Business Advisory
Committee on Youth Employment and as Vice-Chairman of the Business Council of
BC. He is also Past Chairman of the Canadian Gas Association.
Ballard Power Systems is the world leader in the development of proton
exchange membrane fuel-cell power systems. At the heart of its products is
the Ballard Fuel Cell, a proprietary zero-emission engine that converts
natural gas, methanol, gasoline, or hydrogen fuel into electricity without
combustion. Ballard is working with leading international companies including
Daimler-Benz, Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Nissan, Hitachi, Honda,
Matsushita Electric Works, Volkswagen, Volvo, GPU International and GEC
ALSTHOM to develop zero-emission engines for vehicles and clean stationary
power plants.
