That's good advice if the Mac mini (or any Mac) were to be your main computer, but as Don indicated, they're great to learn on and still quite capable machines.

The 2012 Mac mini can take up to 16GB of RAM, it's not limited to 4GB, and it can be user installed quite easily.

They also make great little media centers when attached to a TV. Just add some external storage or stream from a NAS device and away you go.
