ON THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN COMBAT... So often we refer to those amazingly brave men and women who died in combat as having given up their lives... The phrase gave up their lives has unfortunately become almost trite and worn and has lost its real and genuine meaning, although this is surely not in any way to suggest giving one's life is merely trite... in fact, I'm saying just the opposite and want to magnify each and every loss and make each and every loss personal to each and every one of us today... The fact is they gave up FAR MORE than their lives... Many people today have lives with no dreams and with no hopes, we can see them here and there... Our great American heroes gave up so much more than only their lives, they gave and sacrificed their personal dreams for their own future after the war which could have been had they survived, they gave and sacrificed their personal hopes for a future for themselves and for their families after the war which could have been had they survived, they put aside everything in their life that meant anything to them in full and complete exchange for our freedoms today... We MUST NEVER FORGET what these amazing and great American heroes put aside for all of us and for each of us individually... to realize the true depth of their magnificent sacrifices we have to personalize it for each and every one of us... knowing about their loss intellectually is one thing, feeling their loss emotionally is another and this is what puts it all into complete and true perspective... GZ
