George:YOU JUST MAY BE RIGHT. My thinking on mergers and consolidations is that it does make things happen in an industry. What happens, to my way of thinking, is based on the motivations involved in each situation.
If it is to consolidate costs of R &D, marketing, spread the delema of drugs going off patent,manufacturing,,ETC.( all or some of these) what comes out is certainly a more competitive company. This is apparently the motivation behind SKB and AHP. Now how the other big drug companies react is anybodies guess. The "experts" are saying others will follow, according to WSJ. Then there will be those that deal with the new Goliaths of the industry thru concentration on specific markets and it is this group that will be looking closely at the XOMAs and NVXs that are out there to SHARE R&D, increase their product flow and remain competitive,IMO.. They I would think will be highly motivated to protect their turf.
Even if the SKB/AHP deal does cool down completely it won't over nite and in the meantime alot of wheels will be churning in the drug industry. Some are bound to be proactive.
I like that. I consider it very positive.
IN the telecommunications industry CSCO carved out the lions share with one big merger and a lot of little acquisitions.
We'll see. :-}
