Wharfie,
The objective is to accurately count the number of people, not citizens. The Census Bureau itself says that that question will lead to an undercount of about 8% of the population.
First of all, they ask many questions on the census, including what race you are. If you actually believed the left's narrative about "white privilege," that would mean the race question would also lead to an undercount. But the left isn't calling for the removal of that question, are they?

Second, the Census Bureau has ways to make up for any and all factors which lead to undercounting. That includes going door-to-door. If illegal immigrants fear mundane census takers, they'd fear ANY government official, but we all know they don't, especially given how many of them show up for welfare benefits, driver's licenses, and even Social Security benefits.

Third, the estimate in your report says that the potential undercount would be 2.2%, not 8%. But that's a nitpick.

Fourth, the fears over a citizenship question are being ACTIVELY spread by the left. The report that you linked to are citing the effects of said fears but makes no mention over who is creating those fears. Heck, they even cite surveys asking households who have nothing but U.S. citizens whether OTHER households might fear answering said citizenship question. That's greatly exaggerating the fears.

Fifth, most households that have non-citizen residents have nothing to fear anyway, since most non-citizens in this country are legal residents. Although households that have illegal immigrants might have something to fear, the citizenship question doesn't ask, "Are you a legal resident?" That's stupid, but typical of the left to confuse citizenship with legal residence, given that the left loves confusing legal with illegal immigration.

And sixth, FDR once said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." That explains the whole controversy over the citizenship question, because the fears over that question are completely manufactured and benefit the left. It's obvious they want illegal immigrants to be overcounted because that would lead to so-called "blue states" getting more representation than they frankly deserve.
