Prior to the advent of the Euro - the currency - France used to be the best kept open secret in Europe. Travel was inexpensive, hotels and restaurants moderate... a 5 day ski ticket in (IMO) the greatest ski resort in the world - Chamonix Mt Blanc - was under $100. The French Franc was chronically weak, which made all this possible. It all changed with the Euro. Doesn’t look like the locals are better off for it.
