| | | Slavery was simply the way things were. It was the way of life. And not black slavery - anyone could be a slave. Most slaves, actually, were white - at least in Europe. When Romans would fight a war, various spoils would go to the government - and to pay for the costs of war - but, selling prisoners into slavery used to be, specifically, the general's compensation. Typically, a successful general would become rich as a result of a victorious campaign.
Slavery in Ancient Greece was absolutely normal:
Slavery was a common practice in ancient Greece, as in other societies of the time. Some Ancient Greek writers (including, most notably, Aristotle) considered slavery natural and even necessary. This paradigm was notably questioned in Socratic dialogues; the Stoics produced the first recorded condemnation of slavery. [2]
Most activities were open to slaves except politics, which was reserved for citizens. The principal use of slaves was in agriculture, but hundreds of slaves were also used in stone quarries or mines, and perhaps two per household were domestic servants. It is certain that Athens had the largest slave population, with as many as 80,000 in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, with average of three or four slaves per household, except in poor families.

So, not to justify the practice, but to act as if slavery was an American “invention” ought to be a grave insult to our voter’s intelligence. They are placing a bet on our voter’s stupidity and ignorance. Let’s hope they lose. |
