“Go Back?” Those Living In Trump’s Ancestral Village Hope He Never Returns

Donald Trump's grandfather migrated to the U.S. from Kallstadt, Germany, and residents there now lament the association.

Ashamed to be connected to the President of the United States by way of his ancestry, residents of the small German town where Donald Trump’s grandfather was born hope the president has no plans to “go back” to his own country of origin, according to The Washington Post.

Following Trump’s weekend tweet telling four U.S. congresswomen of color they should return to their countries of origin — despite three being U.S.-born and the other a citizen since age 17 — the people of Kallstadt are even less thrilled about a presidential visit.

Trump’s grandfather was born there in 1869, the Post reported, but migrated to the United States at 16 in hopes of finding a better life than his small hometown could possibly offer. Friedrich Trump also wanted to escape the mandatory military service Germany required at the time.

Though current residents of Kallstadt generally oppose President Trump’s stance on immigration, prior to his racist weekend tweets — and his doubling down on them since — the townspeople would have welcomed him, should he have decided to visit.

But now, they are largely embarrassed to be connected to the U.S. president, the Post said.

“It’s sad that this man has origins here,” the owner of a local holiday home anonymously told the publication. “It almost makes me personally ashamed."
