Intel's Slot 1 technology (PII)is being phased out according to Intel's announced last friday. They are going to go back to an upgraded Socket 7 technology.

I missed this! I think I will reconsider the configuration of SuperG already. I feel more comfortible with socket seven. What is meant by a "modified socket 7"?? My intent is to maintain a computer that can be upgraded. Will a motherboard with a modified socket 7 also accept other socket 7 CPU's? Can I shop for a modified socket 7 motherboard and then put in a lower price CPU.... AMD K6 233 or other. ( I agree with the comment about using a mid range CPU, the cost of the top CPU does not seem to justify the benefit). The intent will be to pull the CPU and upgrade it when the price of the higher level CPU comes down.

It will benefit the consumer if the chip manufacturers allow us to upgrade. I still find it hard to believe that Intel has done an about face!
