Hi Charles,
We all reach a point in our lives where we are pretty smart. This also includes the learning curve relating to professionals of science. Well, if we keep learning and researching, one day we learn there is more to learn and understand than what we know. At that time we are qualified to have professional opinions. Take this for an example. You and I discuss your health. I say I do not know what is wrong with, lets say your stomach. Who cares, my not knowing the answer about your stomach is not important. Now if your doctor, says he doesn't have the slightest clue as to what is wrong with your stomach, you may have cause to worry. You see, your doctor knows a lot about a stomach. Through the years he has learned more and more. But in the process he has learned more and more about what he wishes he did know, but doesn't. A professional is not as valuable when he knows the answers as when he can identify what is known and what he needs to know. Then he can predict the risks a little better.
You are learning right now about metals, analysis and related problems. You are starting to learn what you don't know. Were you better off when you thought you knew more? I say you are better now.
But now you start to know more and use more information in weighing your opinions. The answers are not as clear as they used to be. mike
