| | | “Why is Donald Trump effectively bulletproof? Why is everything he says or does dismissed or ignored by his supporters and Republican politicians?”
By now everyone in the world knows exactly who Trump is — or they are completely disconnected from US politics. Either way, positions aren’t changing.
The Republicans who back Trump have decided they’d rather have him than anyone else, including other Republicans. He’s the president; he beat all the other Republicans and then Hillary so he’s a winner; and they want to see themselves as winners. His actions may hurt some of his supporters (farmers) but he keeps saying he’s their friend. And he gives some of his friends money, sometimes.
[ There's really an internalization going on. Trump's imaginary successes become theirs. To true losers, winning by allegiance to Trump is psychologically important. ]
Fox News Network and the GOP have adopted “compromise is treason” as their motto. They demonize their opponents. With no interest in compromise, they feel no need to be liked or respected by Democrats, liberals, independents, or anyone in any other country. In fact, the more non-Republicans hate Trump, the more Republicans like him. And, since liberals, Democrats, and the media are all enemies, insulting and angering them makes Trump’s supporters happy.
This won’t change until Republican losses become so great that they start thinking of Trump as “a loser”. I’ll vote against every Republican running in every possible race, from now until they change. |
