You might find the DSL to be a tad disappointing. You can't go back to even 1.5 mbps implied
speed once you've had cable at 2.5 mbps assured speed. The technological problems of copper
transmission haven't been solved, they never will be.

The technological problems don't necessarily need to be solved for DSL to be a success. Even if, as you state, you can only get 333Kbs/sec, with the wide coverage of copper versus cable, you could see lots of people buying into it. And as David mentioned, what about those who want mobile access as well?
