Alomex,

>>"NT 5.0 could slip to 1999; An Apple opportunity?"<<

>Not really. NT users are not clamoring for a new release. A slip is not going to affect anything much. Let's keep things in perspective...<

1) I was talking to our systems(NT) guy about the Rhapsody beta. He had a big smile when he told me how easily he had created a simple text app for it. This guy's not a programmer. I remarked that because Rhapsody is UNIX based, there was a possibility that it could turn the whole client/server paridyme upside down. He agreed. This guy has been very successful maintaining our NT/Novell/Mac system. So it is possible.

2) >OpenGL drivers for Newer's 3Dlabs Glint-based RenderPIX accelerator card and ATI's Xclaim 3D are expected to arrive in time for Macworld in January. In addition, Conix offers software developers a complete SDK with full support of OpenGL libraries. Early adopters of OpenGL for the Mac include Hash, with 3D Animation Pro; Silicon Graphics and Cosmo Player; and a short list of vendors with more specialized scientific applications. Conix also hints at partnerships with several prominent Mac 3D companies by early 1998.<

This could be fairly big news. If SGI decides to support Rhapsody, as is the rumour, it is one more brick in the wall. Already CA, SAP, Oracle, DB2, and EMC(I think) are supporting it. All big client/server players.

Many systems people have been run ragged by NT (7895 & 7888), many others, like our own, have survived but still are openminded about Rhapsody. No one knows what will happen, but considering the enormous changes that have taken place in just the past 10 years almost anything is possible. Like I've said many times, Rhapsody is the key.

If it works, watch out, if not, bye bye Apple. My opinion as of now is that it will work, but it will take two to three years to gain acceptance. Both of our systems guys say Apple seems to have become much more pragmatic lately.
