I had a private teacher on and off for almost 10 years. He told me, many years ago now, that "you'd only need to spend like 6 months in Japan and you'd really do OK".
Well, since my in-laws passed away and my wife thus stopped travelling to Japan frequently, first 15 years with the kids (2 sons) all summer vacs and next until aro 20 years ago, when my in-laws passed away, my good Japanese skills from back then have deteriorated.
Now, with a solid bottom developed, I just need 2-3 weeks to warm up to it and have since then travelled on biz to Japan with few problems.
Having learned a foreign language, but then not using it for some extended time, one also need to develop a good personal system for recovery of it when required. For me that works well with my Japanese and my French.

Language skills IMHO have very little to do with elevated intelligence, like it is generally believed in the US.
