I also think that most value indexes screw towards P/B which is a questionable metric and becomes more questionable as time passes.

If you don't use price to book to judge value, what in the world do you use?

You can adjust book value for this and that (good will, etc.), but my general thoughts on value and growth are......

A Value Stock is a stock with a price to book below its comparable group, and

A Growth Stock is a stock with revenues/earnings/cash flow growth above it's comparable group.

You get to choose the comparable group, and you can adjust book value/revenues/earnings/cash flow as you deem appropriate, but those two definitions are basically it in a nutshell

I recall reading WSJ articles in the 1990's where some Value fund manager was doing great with Cisco as his top holding, and his explanation was the "I see value in Cisco....."
