Renting space on a server for asp.net with sql server costs $20/month or a tad more if you have much bandwidth at AWS Lightsail. I can't imagine the bandwidth here is particularly high.

I have killed off a couple of sites I ended up wishing I hadn't. They were paying for themselves plus a little, but not worth the hassle of handling support calls, so I killed them. Now, I think the time is right to bring them back in a more modern style but my brand is essentially gone -- other than the domain names. That was a dumb thing to have done in retrospect.

I think if I owned SI I would upgrade it to a modern UI and try to turn it into something. Starting a brand is hard to do -- but StackOverflow has taken a single brand and turned it into many.

Si could perhaps do the same. But it needs a modern SPA with good mobile support, that sort of stuff. I don't think a rewrite would require a massive investment but the owners may have better paying gigs.
