" ... gets replaced by someone else from the same party who significantly changes the political direction"

In the "democracies" that you refer to a political party stands in a General Election on the basis of a Manifesto. It was the previous Prime Minister, Theresa May, who "significantly changed the political direction". The Conservative Party stated in the last election that they would abide by the REFERENDUM of 2016 where the majority of those who voted in that Referendum Voted TO LEAVE THE EUROPEAN UNION as in ...

Prime Minister Theresa May put together a "Deal" with the EU THAT STILL TIED the UK to the EU in various aspects. The Referendum question was SIMPLE AND STRAIGHTFORWARD, Remain a member, "Yes" or "No". There was nothing there about Leaving, BUT stay with one foot in this part, or one foot in another part ..... IT WAS ABOUT LEAVING THE EUROPEAN UNION IN TOTO.

When Theresa May's deal was put before the UK Parliament IT WAS REJECTED 3 TIMES, the first time by the largest vote, EVER, against a sitting government's motion.

What we now see is a New UK Prime Minister determined to work towards the WISHES OF THE MAJORITY OF UK CITIZENS WHO VOTED IN THE 2016 REFERENDUM AND THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY'S MANIFESTO OF THE LAST GENERAL ELECTION IN 2017.
