donsurber.blogspot.com Highlights of the News

Good morning. Donald John Trump is still our president.

ITEM 1: Fox News reported, "President Trump took the stage at a campaign rally in Cincinnati Thursday night, his first such event since his supporters drew bipartisan condemnation last month by engaging in an impromptu 'Send her back!' chant directed at Somali-born Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.

"Almost immediately, Trump charged that the 'Democrat Party is now being led by four left-wing extremists who reject everything that we hold dear' -- an apparent reference to the group of freshman House Democrats including Omar. The comment drew jeers, but no chanting, from attendees.

"Trump then condemned the wasted money by Democrats that has led to blight in the inner cities -- but said he would decline to specify which cities he was referring to, because 'we want no controversy.'"

The president also said of this week's debates, "The Democrats spent more time attacking Barack Obama than they did attacking me."

Well, everybody loves a winner and nobody likes a loser.

ITEM 2: The South China Morning Post reported, "President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will impose new tariffs on $300 billion worth of Chinese imports following a high-level trade mission that, Trump said, produced too little in terms of concessions from Beijing.

"U.S. customs will impose 'a small, additional' levy of 10 per cent on the imports, starting September 1.

"'China agreed to buy agricultural product from the U.S. in large quantities, but did not do so,' the U.S. leader said in a series of tweets.

"'Additionally, my friend President Xi said that he would stop the sale of Fentanyl to the United States – this never happened, and many Americans continue to die!'"

Tariffs are voluntary taxes. You can pay them and buy communist junk from Red China, or you can skip the tariffs by being American and buying American.

ITEM 3: The Washington Examiner reported, "The Trump administration announced plans to allow the importation of drugs from other countries, a major part of President Trump's agenda for lowering the cost of prescriptions."

The story also said, "The proposal, the Safe Importation Action Plan, calls for a rule making to authorize state, wholesaler, or pharmacy plans to try to set up drug importation programs that abide by FDA safety standards. The FDA would also work with manufacturers to assure that the drugs sold to foreign countries abide by FDA regulations to be sold in the U.S."

Be American, buy Canadian.

ITEM 4: Bloomberg News reported, "Sweden’s introduction on Thursday of a tax aimed at phasing out the nation’s last remaining coal and gas plants to curb global warming comes with an unintended consequence for some of its biggest cities.

"Hiking threefold a levy on fossil fuels used at local power plants will make such facilities unprofitable and utilities from Stockholm Exergi AB to EON SE have said they will halt or cut power production."

What's the problem? They taxed the power to get rid of coal. It worked.

As Ann Landers used to say, KwitCherBitchin.

ITEM 5: The New York Post reported, "Google’s carbon-spewing climate change conference at an Italian resort has been widely slammed as a tone-deaf party for the elite A-listers who jetted there.

The story also said, "As the party drew to a close on Thursday, newspaper columns and social media were awash with criticism for the three-day, billionaire-packed event — which saw more than 200 of the world’s richest and most famous names take private jets to the Italian island and stay on mega yachts while also talking about stopping climate change."

If only there were a way they could meet without leaving their homes. But sigh, Al Gore hasn't invented the Internet yet.

ITEM 6: The Daily Caller reported, "The University of Florida (UF) agreed yesterday to pay their Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) student chapter $66,000, and amend their school policy to allow conservative groups to have access to more financial resources.

"In December of last year, the UF student YAF chapter filed a lawsuit against the school for allegedly violating students’ First and Fourteenth Amendment rights.

"The lawsuit stemmed from the University designating the chapter as a non-budgeted organization, meaning they would be forced to petition the school for funding for each event they seek to host. In addition, the policy disqualified them from being able to use student activity fees to go towards a speaker’s attendance fee."

I will await the Start-Your-Own-College argument that supports censoring conservatives.

ITEM 7: CNBC reported, "A federal judge temporarily blocked New York state officials from giving President Donald Trump’s state tax returns to a House committee chairman, according to a court filing made public Thursday."

The judge is Carl Nichols, appointed by President Trump.

Cocaine (or if you prefer, Moscow) Mitch pushed through 13 judicial confirmations this week. He is saving the republic.

ITEM 8: Breitbart News reported, "A group of supporters of 2020 White House hopeful Marianne Williamson has put together an occult task force in support of the spiritual guru; however, her campaign is none too pleased about the move.

"In an interview with the Washington Post, the anonymous individual heading up the task force told the Jeff Bezos-owned newspaper that 13 witches, chaos magicians, and energy workers performed gestures in an effort to get Williamson more speaking time during Tuesday’s Democrat presidential primary debate in Detroit, Michigan."

The Post is going after Williamson the way it went after Donald Trump four years ago. This means a Pulitzer for them and a nomination for her.

ITEM 9: Breibart News reported, "Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA)’s campaign press secretary suggested Russia was behind Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) after she landed an effective blow on Harris’ record as a prosecutor during the Democrat debates on Wednesday night.

"Her press secretary, Ian Sams, tweeted shortly after the attack an NBC News article from February 2019 claiming the 'Russian propaganda machine' was promoting Gabbard:

"Reporters writing their stories with eyes on the modern-day assignment desk of Twitter, read this: The Russian propaganda machine that tried to influence the 2016 election is now promoting the presidential aspirations of a controversial Hawaii Democrat,' he tweeted. He later retweeted his tweet."

Remember that girl in elementary school who said the Russians ate her homework? That little girl was she.

ITEM 10:

CNN has too much time on its hands.

Maybe it should send its reporters outside to cover some real news.

ITEM 11: WJZ reported, "Baltimore Police are investigating after the home of Rep. Elijah Cummings was broken into early Saturday morning. The burglary occurred around 3:40 a.m. at his Baltimore home in the 2000 block of Madison Avenue."

Let's see, on Monday someone found that in 1996 he had called his constituents drug-addicted zombies.

Then on Tuesday, he refused to tour his own district with HUD officials.

Now this.

Since he pushed for impeachment two weeks ago, Cummings has become a Fountain of Trumpenfreude.

ITEM 12: CBS reported, "The ideological schism between factions within the Democratic Party quickly emerged during the first minutes of the second Democratic debate, with the progressive firebrands on stage strongly defending their Medicare-for-all single-payer health care plans and the more centrist candidates casting their proposals as unrealistic and too extreme.

"When the CNN moderators for the debate on Tuesday night in Detroit pressed the more progressive White House hopefuls on whether their health care proposals involve a tax hike for the middle class, most candidates skirted the question.

"Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts — two high-profile progressives who frequently tout their strong and early support for Medicare-for-all — said their health care plans involve tax hikes, but for billionaires and large corporations."

Medicare is financed by a 2.9% payroll tax (half directly deducted from paychecks, half employer match). They want to expand it to cover 5 times as many people. 5 times 2.9 equals a pay cut of more than 10% for most Americans.

ITEM 13: Mitt Romney tweeted, "Asked why Bernie Sanders is so angry, the answer is simple: 28 years in Congress and never able to pass even a scintilla of his socialist agenda. All hat, no cattle."

Romney sounded disappointed by the failure of Sanders to pass socialist legislation. Maybe the rookie senator from Utah can co-sponsor some of those bills and help him out.

I was going to write that this marked the first time since his election that Romney criticized a Democrat, but Bernie was elected as an independent. Still waiting.

ITEM 14: Breitbart News reported, "Former Vice President Joe Biden dodged questions from debate challenger Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City on deportations during the second day of CNN’s Democrat debates on Wednesday, saying those conversations were private."

He is running as Urkel's third term. Even Democrats don't want that.
