Hurd is the eighth Republican representative to leave Congress instead of seeking reelection.
Texas Republican Will Hurd, a former CIA agent, said he will not seek reelection in 2020, according to CNN.
Hurd, a three-time congressman, represents the largest stretch of U.S.-Mexico border of any congressional district, a district that switched parties in 2011. A GOP strategist said that his retirement is a “huge loss,” and that the 23rd Congressional District of Texas will “likely fall into Dem hands.” Since his election in 2015, Hurd faced three democratic opponents; Gina Ortiz Jones, activist Rosalinda Ramos Abuabara and former RT journalist Liz Wahl.
As a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, Hurd attacked Trump for his tweets against the progressive Democratic congresswomen, calling it out of line and a “deterrent to diversifying the Republican Party”.
He additionally was an ardent opponent to Trump’s border wall.
“The $32 billion that would go into a border wall, I’m just even more convinced that it would be better spent with some of these existing programs, and we’d see a quicker decrease in drugs and illegal immigation,” he told CNN in 2018, citing a trip to Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
As the only African-American House Republican, Hurd has promised to remain “involved in politics to help make sure the Republican Party looks like America.” |
