Fred was 21 years old at the time and was released and charges were dropped. He had no social standing at that early age so there would have been no coercive influence placed on the prosecutor to drop the charges particularly since charges were not dropped against some of the Klan members that were arrested at the same time.

Looks more like he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
